RSS FEEDS: Why Use RSS Feeds
2nd in a series on RSS FEEDS
As discussed in the first article, RSS is a process to share information both from the author and user’s point of view without the user going to the author’s site. So, let us look at this from both side of the communication process.
From the website author’s point of view, The RSS Feed is providing information; it is an activity to improve communication flow. How is that, you ask. As you have been using the Internet, some of the sites you visit may ask you to sign up to stay informed. With that activity, you are signing up for an email mailing list and with that process, the emails start coming.
Do you wonder why you get so many emails? This is what signing up for Email lists cause and some of these sites share their email lists, so you get even more emails from the secondary sources. I sometimes feel buried by emails and it is not fun! I want the information, but in a manner that I can control. Continue reading
RSS FEEDS: the process
1st in a series on RSS FEEDS
RSS is quite common on the Internet; you can see the button everywhere! It is a process to share information both from the author and users point of view without the user going to the author’s site. Web feeds is the name used for this type of information sharing. The Wikipedia article on web feeds has more details on who, what, when, where and why. We are not going into that type of detail; rather this is the first blog in a series of articles to explain how to use RSS feeds and the tools you use in the process. In the rest of the series we will discuss the compelling question of why use RSS feed, how you set it up, where you can place it so the author and user can do more than just say they are using RSS feeds. Internet Wisdom
Internet Wisdom, KMH Kreations’ Blog is intended to help businesses and other users of the Internet to better understand not only the basics but to have discussions that share wisdom onthe latest ideas that are part of the Internet /Web industry.
We touch on almost every facet of the Internet from hardware tosoftware technology advances and even a bit on the pitfalls of a given technology. The biggest thing we will look at is how the interfaces between hardware and software affect the use of a website. Our effort is to bring the impact into a clearer picture for the end users and their clients.
As we talk with clients it become apparent that many of the technologies that we take for granted are foreign to them and as a result they place a lot of trust into their web designers to provide the right tools for their website. On the other hand, they want technology put into their site for various reasons, unaware of what the cost will be to keep it up and active. In the article, “The Top Three Indicators it is time for A Website Redesign” this situation is discussed.
One key point about Internet Wisdom is its effort to provide ideas and approaches inthe use social media tools like Blogs, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn or even basic items like calendars or pictures. Website owners want their site to be alive and vibrant but are not sure what that means in the way of time and energy. A second part of Internet Wisdom’s purpose is to provide insightful information on the Internet’s tools; focusing on what it takes to keep them up to date.
Our mascot “The Honu” represents KMH Kreations on our mission. It is said Honus (Green Sea Turtle) lead the Hawaiian people to their Islands, so KMH Kreations with it’s Internet Wisdom is here to help guide you through the constantly changing sea of Internet information and technology, lead you to where you know what you want, and how it get there.
Join us on this mission, you may have an area you would like to discuss, please share that with us. Stop by and share your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages; just click on the buttons in the upper right corner of this page or fill in the comments section below.
Flash For Froyo!
In May, 2010 we published this blog;
In an interview with the New York Times, Google’s Vice President Andy Rubin tells the world that Adobe’s Flash will be supported on the Android Operating System 2.2 or Froyo (Frozen Yogurt) as it is usually referred to.
When asked about Apple’s decision to not allow flash development for the iPhone, Andy compares Apple to North Korea, due to the removal of choice. “When they can’t have something, people do care. Look at the way politics work. I just don’t want to live in North Korea.”
The whole thing started after Apple updated its iPhone developer program license. The updated version included this paragraph:
“3.3.1 – Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).”
The definition of stupidity is: doing the same thing twice, expecting different results. There must be some reason that even though, Macs have better graphics, better nano-technology, and less bugs, they still lose in the market to PCs. Hmm. Could it be Price or Compatibility?
Andy Rubin also said: “Open is open and we live by our own implementations.” This should be Google’s new slogan! Truer words have never been spoken! In the end, Andy Rubin feels that it is only a matter of time before Android sales exceeds iPhone sales, and with an all encompassing, universal Google-rich, open source solution that includes Flash (which is already widely used), it may seem, that the world is about to see the “Rise of the Droid” era, while iPhone may get ironically shut out, just like they have done to Adobe.
Now just over a year later the “Droids” are everywhere, have things changed in one year?
Do you think that Apple is making the same mistake twice? I look forward to your thoughts…
Why have a website on the Internet?
When I talk with clients about their website desires. The reasons or actual needs that are explained are always very interesting and a bit confusing. There tends to be a want and desire but little true direction on what shape or form the web site should have.
The true heart of what we find to answer the why are:
- Grow a business by expanding the customer base through the use of the web
- Reach various current or new target audiences, knowing that more and more people use the web to find the business services they want or need
- Find new and more efficient ways to communicate with existing and future customers
- To keep up with the times and show you are a savey business that understands your clients needs
- The client’s customers expects to see a web presence
Understanding the why of the client.
A website must be an extension of the clients and their business. The feeling and impressions found on the site are vital. Designers must know their clients direction and business concerns. Web Designer’s activities always need to center on the clients web needs and what business activities they wish to have that involve the web. The best way to do this is with a formal survey process plus one on one meetings. The formal survey process and recorded information insures that the designer and clients are as we say, “on the same page”. With the survey, the designer attempts to capture and understand and the direction in which a clients wants for the web presences, plus it insures that no vital area has been overlooked.
We find that through interviews with the principle parties of the business. The design team leader thus can understand and actually walk the client through their own thoughts and concerns the client wants the project to follow.
Good web designers tailors their efforts to the clients true sense of why they want the site and answers the how of the equations with program elements laid out in an integrated plan. I encourage you to look at the design process KMH Kreations has outlined on their website as a strong method to understand the clients whys of website development.
